Weight is the force exerted on an object by
gravity. The weight of an object depends on
its mass-the amount of material in it-and the
strength of the Earth's gravitational pull,
which decreases with height. Consequently, an
object weighs less at the top of a mountain
than at sea level. On the Moon, an object has
only one-sixth of its weight on Earth,
because the pull of the Moon's gravity is
one-sixth that of the Earth.
